DIGGING DEEP
COURAGE (IV)
TEXT:
Ecc.10:10
Introduction: We said in the first part of this
study that courage is the quality of a confident character not to be afraid or
intimidated easily but without being incautious or inconsiderate. This
definition differentiate courage from foolishness by incorporating the element
of caution. Here caution is not fear but the exercise of wisdom. Courage
without wisdom results in foolishness. Wisdom directs the courageous. Today, we
will look at the wisdom dimension of courage. May God give us wisdom and
courage.
1.
1Sam.16:
1-5
▪
God
gave Samuel a dangerous assignment. (v1)
▪
He
did not reject the assignment but expressed his fear to God (v2)
▪
God
gave him wisdom to carry out the assignment (v2-5)
It would have been foolish for
Samuel to proceed with the assignment without expressing his fear and receiving
help from God.
2.
1Kig.17:
1-3; 8-16
▪
From
what or whom did God hid Elijah? The famine or Ahab? Ahab of course.
▪
Elijah
could stand up to Ahab but God will not allow it, 1Kig.18:10
▪
When
the time comes to see Ahab, God told him to go, 1Kig.18:1
It is foolishness to stand up to Ahab when God
did not command it. It is courage to go and see Ahab when God commanded it. Wisdom
is to hold back when God commands and to go when God so commands
3.
Jo.11:
7-10
▪
Jesus,
though the Lord of Hosts, did not take unnecessary risk
▪
He
was aware the Jews were looking out to kill him, so He will not travel by night
▪
V53-57
Jesus kept himself safe and probably did not attend the Passover and did not
enter the city of Jerusalem until his arrest, this is courage.
Courage
is to understand the time and your environment. To know when to act and when
not to act. Jesus keeping himself safe is courage so He could finish His
assignment.
Conclusion:
“Discretion
is the better part of valor. Valor mean boldness to face dangers. One who does
not face dangers boldly is a coward.
But if one foolishly faces danger, risking his
life, it cannot be called a praiseworthy act”
